Family Breakfast Favourites: Cosy mornings, smiles and a side of maple syrup!
February 08 2025 – Dawn Chapman

Let’s be honest—there’s no better way to start the day than with a big, hearty breakfast. The kind with the whole family gathered ‘round the table, loads of chatter, some play fighting, kids fighting over the last drop of OJ, maple syrup sticky fingers and the tangle of fresh roast coffee and bacon wafting through the kitchen.
Breakfast for me is filled with special memories and I’d love to share some of those fave recipes with you. So, grab a fork, maybe a napkin, and let me take you through our family’s go-to breakfast faves!
1. Lazy Daisy’s Blueberry Pancakes with Mennonite Smoked Bacon & Maple Syrup
Okay, let me start with the obvious: Lazy Daisy’s Blueberry Pancakes. Yes, these are the very same pancakes we serve at the cafe (shameless plug, I know), but these truly are a family favourite and for good reason. They’re fluffy clouds of happiness with a pop of fresh blueberries that give you that, “I’m having breakfast, and basically living my best life” moment.
Slather those babies in pure Canadian Maple Syrup and you’re in breakfast heaven. Though you might think that this meal can’t get any more perfect, I am here to tell you that it can.
Add a side of Mennonite smoked bacon … bacon adds the right amount of saltiness to balance out the sweetness of the pancakes and syrup.
This breakfast is our go-to for lazy weekends, when we’ve got nowhere to be (except, maybe, on the couch with a cup of coffee in hand). All I can say is thank goodness for Skip the Dishes and Uber Eats because there’s nothing better than ordering breakfast or brunch in when you’re not quite ready to change out of your PJs for the day.
2. Cinnamon French Toast Croissants
As much as I love a lazy morning, there are days when a little extra effort can turn a simple breakfast into an extraordinary brunch (think Family Day weekend or Valentine’s Day brunch) And for this my friends, I love nothing more than to make Cinnamon French Toast Croissants. This breakfast is everything you love about French toast, but with the added luxury of buttery, flaky croissants.
I ‘butterfly’ the croissants (cut them length wise, not quite in half so they look like a butterfly).in Mix a few eggs, a sprinkle of cinnamon, a dash of vanilla, and a pinch of nutmeg. Then, I griddle them up on medium heat until they’re golden brown on the outside but soft and pillowy on the inside. The result? Mealtime Magic.
I usually serve these with a dusting of powdered sugar (because a little sweetness never hurt anyone) and fresh berries.
It’s the kind of breakfast that has you asking, “Can I just eat this every day for the rest of my life?”
3. Overnight Blueberry Chia Pudding
Okay, I know what you’re thinking. “Overnight chia pudding? Really? Are we trying to pretend this is some health food blog?” And I get it. Chia pudding doesn’t sound nearly as exciting as pancakes or French toast. But hear me out—this stuff is actually delicious.
The beauty of Overnight Blueberry Chia Pudding is that you make it the night before and wake up to a ready-to-eat, nutritious breakfast. The chia seeds absorb the almond milk, creating a thick, creamy pudding that’s surprisingly satisfying. I add a bit of vanilla, a drizzle of maple syrup, and top it all off with fresh blueberries.
Now, you might be wondering if this is actually “good” or just a fad that health bloggers have latched onto. Trust me, I didn’t expect to fall in love with chia pudding, but here I am, eating it by the spoonful like it’s going out of style. It’s a simple, wholesome way to start the day, especially when you’ve already eaten your body weight in pancakes and croissants the previous morning. (Balance, right?)
4. Breakfast Sammy with Daisy’s Bake at Home Buttermilk Biscuits
There’s something about a breakfast sandwich that just feels...right. And when you use Lazy Daisy’s Bake at Home Buttermilk Biscuits…Oh, honey, now you’ve got something worth waking up for. The biscuits are flaky, buttery, and melt-in-your-mouth perfect. I bake them up, slice them open, and fill them with scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, and a slice of cheddar cheese.
This sandwich is hearty enough to satisfy even the hungriest of teenagers, but easy enough to make on a busy weekday morning. Sometimes, I throw in a little avocado or hot sauce if I’m feeling wild, but honestly, the classic version is just right. It’s a meal you can eat with one hand while holding your coffee in the other—because weekday mornings can be a little tough, but that doesn’t mean breakfast has to be.
These biscuits are so easy to bake at home. Just 30 minutes in the oven at 350 or 20 in an air fryer on the French fry setting and you’ll have yourself biscuits that taste like you’ve been baking all day (but without the mess). You can even throw some flour on your face to give yourself that ‘I’ve been baking’ feel.
Daisy’s makes them from scratch so you don’t have to. Better to spend your energy sipping your coffee and having a laugh with your fam.
5. The Full English Breakfast: A Bit of Home from Across the Pond

Now, if you’ve ever had a Full English Breakfast, you know it’s not just a meal—it’s a celebration. And for us, it’s a family tradition that takes me straight back to my time living in England. My husband, James, is British, so on special weekends, we recreate the Full English at home.
We’re talking fried eggs, crispy bacon, sausages, sautéed mushrooms, baked beans, and toast with a slather of butter. And for the love of all that is holy, don’t forget the HP sauce. You can try to have it without, but it’s just not the same. (no, blood pudding is not on the menu…)
This breakfast is what you make when you’ve got time to sit down, savour every bite, and probably undo every good (or bad) decision you made the night before. It’s the kind of meal that fills you up and sets you right for the day. You might need a nap afterward, but hey, that’s a price I’m willing to pay.
Whether we’re having it on a Saturday morning or for Sunday brunch with friends, the Full English always brings a bit of British charm to the table. And as much as I love pancakes, croissants, and chia pudding, there’s something about this big, hearty fry up that feels just like home.
A Morning to Remember
So there you have it—our family’s favourite breakfasts, the ones we look forward to, laugh over, and maybe even fight over the last piece of bacon. Breakfast isn’t just about the food—it’s about the moments, the memories, and the people you’re sharing it with. Whether we’re diving into stacks of blueberry pancakes, savouring cinnamon French toast croissants, or enjoying the ultimate Full English, these meals are more than just a way to fill our stomachs. They’re about filling our hearts with warmth, joy and a laugh or two to start the day right.
And hey, if breakfast doesn’t turn out perfect every time? No biggie. Just throw on a little extra maple syrup and call it a win….or head on over to Lazy Daisy’s Café and leave the cooking to us!
